City of London - EC1/2/3/4

The City of London is a miniature city within Greater London. It is the original Roman site of London before it started to consume the surrounding villages and towns. It is just one square mile in size and a giant in the world's economy.

The square mile is actually defined as the stretch from the River Thames in the South to the Barbican Centre in the North, Holborn and Fleet Street to the West and Aldgate and Liverpool Street to the East. The boundary of the City is marked in 10 places by the heraldic dragons that hold the City's coat of arms. Click here for a map of the City of London.

The Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge are perhaps the biggest tourist attractions, but we think it is worth spending time at the indoor markets of Smithfield, Leadenhall and Spitalfield for a true "taste" of City life.

For a square meal in the square mile, we have avoided the eateries aimed at corporations and business lunches, but offer a better value, unique or historical experience. Like, for e.g., Vic Naylor's - a recent film location or, Arkansas Café within Spitalfields market. Other value places include the pie and mash shop Clark and Sons and just outside of the City, the Indian restaurants on Brick Lane.

More up-market restaurants, but still unique are; the Opera lovers Spaghetti Opera, downstairs at the Tao in Bow Lane, TV chef Gary Rhodes' restaurant, City Rhodes and the Conran complex of restaurants at the Great Eastern Hotel next to Liverpool Street station. Plus, we couldn't finish without mentioning the stunning Italian restaurant Caravaggio and the award winning British restaurant St. John's. One word of warning though; many City restaurants are closed at the weekend - so please check first.
