An Asian man is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck with a blunt instrument in what police are treating as a racially-motivated attack.
Kadil Ahmed, 60, was assaulted last night outside a takeaway restaurant in Field End Road, Harrow, north-west London.
At about 10pm, there was a large group of up to 20 people on the pavement, a Scotland Yard spokesman said. It is understood eggs were thrown.
An altercation involving the victim and a white youth took place, in which the victim suffered head injuries as a result of being hit with some sort of blunt instrument.
The victim, who lives nearby, was taken to a central London hospital where his condition is understood to be critical.
A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the assault and is in custody at a north west London police station.
The Yard spokesman said the incident was being treated as racially-motivated at this stage because the suspect was white as were most of the people in the group on the pavement.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Aubeelack, leading the investigation, asked anyone with information about the incident to ring police on 020 8733 3484.
