Egg Bacon Chips And BeansWe follow in the footsteps of author Russell M. Davies sampling the best cafes in London...
Russell M. Davies is the author of the book "Egg Bacon Chips And Beans - 50 Great Cafes And The Stuff That Makes Them Great".
According to Russell, there is nothing quite like a plate of EBCB, "no chip is quite like another chip, never the same combination of crunchy and smooth, no two eggs are ever fried in precisely the same way, different amounts of crispy burntness, different whites, different yellows, beans are never just beans, bacon, well what can you say about bacon? Bacon is the uber-food, the uhr-food, bacon is the alpha and omega, bacon is quite nice, bacon is proof of the existence of God."
A History Of Pie And MashWe take a look at the origins of this London favourite and find the best places to get it...
Pie and Mash was the staple diet of working class people in the Eastern and Southern parts of London in the 18th and 19th centuries.
During this industrial time, the River Thames was so dirty that one of the few things that could live in it were eels, which when boiled in gelatine (i.e. Jellied Eels) made a 'unique' accompaniment. Parsley sauce (known as liquor) was added to provide flavour to the minced beef pie and mashed potato.
Manze's is one of the longest running Pie and Mash shops which dates to the early 1900s. The décor of traditional Pie and Mash shops like Manze's tends to be blue, green and orange tiles with wooden bench seats and white marble table-tops.
Today, Pie and Mash has to compete with lots of other cheap fast food, but it is still very popular with both locals and visitors. Modern variations on the pies may include vegetarian, organic or square pies.
Even if you have to join the queues at the weekend, we recommend you seek out at least one of the Pie and Mash shops below:
