Soho in London's West End, is in the borough of the City of Westminster. It is an area of approximately one square mile bounded by Oxford Street to the north, Regent Street to the west, Shaftesbury Avenue to the south, and Charing Cross Road to the east.
The name "Soho" is actually derived from a shortening of SOmerset HOuse, a grand palace to be found to the south of the Strand. The Soho district was originally created as a residential area of London in the 17th Century, but more recently it has been known as a red-light district.
A major clean-up operation in the 1980s created a cleaner, safer and more tourist friendly Soho. It is now primarily known for its nightlife including bars, pubs, clubs, theatres and of course big name restaurants many of which offer private dining rooms for group bookings.
However, the Soho name still invokes images of neon lights, peep shows and sex shops.
